What is Master’s Degree?

Master’s Degree is the education level ( in English “master”) that provides an education after getting the bachelor degree. It is obviously a higher stage based on bachelor education that aims to put the result of researching and studying.

Master’s degree will be completed after the person specialises in his branch and proves this with a scientific article (thesis). After graduating and getting the qualification level of master, person receives a title of “scientist”, “specialist doctor”, “engineer”, “architect” and others.

The Purpose of Master’s Degree

The education’s purpose is to acquire profession in scientific sense. Throughout the education, students are taught the methods of scientific research and how to apply these methods to the relevant area. How many years do Master's Degree last

Master’s degree with thesis lasts for 4 terms, which means 2 years. 2 terms of this period are lecture periods.

For students who did not become successful during the lecture or writing of scientific work, 2 semesters are additionally given. At the end of this period, cooperation with a student who has not completed the program successfully ends.

Master’s degree without thesis lasts for 2 terms which is 1 year. After the end of these 2 semesters, the student writes the term project work and becomes a graduate. In case the student could not finish his studies for this period, he is given an additional 1 semester. If the student can not finish his studies even after that period, he is considered an unsuccessful student and the university’s cooperation with him ceases.

How to do Master's Degrees

The quota of the applications for master’s degree is announced two times one in fall and one in spring in the universities’ own websites. The process of applying for a master’s program with writing a scientific paper and the period after admission to the university is as follows:

  1. The candidate that provides the application conditions announced in the universities’ quota, applies to the universities either individually via through the internet or coming to university in person. During the application license diploma (or temporary graduation document), license transcript and document showing the ALES score is requested.
  2. Among the candidates that provided the conditions and applied for quota in master’s degree programs with thesis, those who have the highest preliminary score are called for interview at a planned time.
  3. The interview score is added to the evaluation criteria for the students that have been called for an interview.
  4. The university announces the highest success pointed students within quota as NOBLE, if NOBLE candidates do not register, spare candidates are designated to replace the NOBLE candidates.
  5. After candidates are designated, the registration process begins. During the process, students are asked for required documents. After this process is completed, the candidate becomes officially master’s degree student.
  6. The lectures start after the registration process, and last for 2 years.
  7. With the end of the lecture period, a thesis supervisor is assigned for the student. The student designates the subject of the thesis with his supervisor.
  8. With the end of the lecture period, the student enters the thesis period and starts writing his thesis. During the thesis period, the student only goes to the university to evaluate the going of the thesis.
  9. After the completion of the writing of the thesis, the supervisor and the department are asked to determine the date for the defense of the thesis and the appointment of jury members to evaluate the thesis. During this process, copies of the thesis work are distributed to the jury members for reading. On the date of defense, the student is evaluated either successful or unsuccessful by the jury. The student who is evaluated as a successful graduates the day of the defense.
  10. The student that is evaluated as unsuccessful is asked to make some recommended changes in his thesis and at the end of this time period the student enters the defense again on another date.

The acceptance of master’s degree without thesis does not require ALES and foreign language score also does not require an interview with the choice of the university. After the lecture period, the student prepares a term project and if this project is considered successful by the department, the student graduates.

Varieties of Master's Degree

There are different kinds of master’s programs depending on whether it is mandatory to write a thesis or not, and how the program is taught:

  • Master’s Degree with thesis: Thesis is written after the lecture period.
  • Master’s Degree without thesis: Thesis is not written after the lecture period, a term project is written.
  • Distant master’s degree programs: Can be with thesis or without thesis, the lectures are online over the internet, the students are not to go to university for lectures.
  • Evening education master’s degree programs: Can be with or without thesis, the lectures are generally after work hours, suitable for people who work.

MBA: The short for Master of Business Administration; is a term used for “Business management” master’s degree.
